Futures and perpetual contracts can look almost identical on a trading screen. Both may show a price, a position size, collateral, and unrealized profit or loss. Yet the way exposure is maintained over time can differ substantially. A dated future has a maturity and settlement procedure. A conventional perpetual generally has no scheduled expiry and typically uses funding payments to connect its price to a reference market. Product labels alone are not enough to establish either arrangement.

Every example is hypothetical and omits real-world details unless they are explicitly introduced. Confirm what perpetual actually means
A conventional perpetual is designed to continue without a standard expiry date, but continuing does not mean unconditional. Margin shortfalls, delisting, emergency procedures, and other contract terms can end a position. Products described as perpetual-style may also have a distant contractual maturity. Read the rulebook for the exact product rather than importing an assumption from a different platform. The precise question is what events can force the position to close or settle.

Compare the cash flows over a defined period
For dated futures, maintaining exposure can require closing a near maturity and opening a later one. For perpetuals, holding costs may arrive as repeated funding transfers. These are not interchangeable line items. A roll involves transactions at prevailing prices; funding follows a contract-specific assessment mechanism. The first step in comparison is to choose a holding period, because a cost that appears small over a few hours may matter over several weeks.
Create separate columns for entry fees, exit fees, spread assumptions, rolling transactions, and funding. Do not report a total until you have specified which components apply. A simple paper example might assume $10,000 of constant notional exposure for three funding intervals. That is a controlled illustration, not a prediction that notional or funding will remain constant. In a real position, both can change, making a single extrapolated rate an unreliable summary of the eventual cash flow.
Work through funding without calling it yield
Suppose an illustrative funding mechanism charges the long side 0.01% of a $10,000 position at one assessment. The payment is $1. If the same assumptions held for three assessments, the total would be $3. If the sign changed, the long side might receive rather than pay at a later assessment. This example assumes the stated convention, interval, and eligible notional; actual contracts must be checked for all three. It is not a quoted market funding rate.
Receiving funding does not make the overall position profitable. Price losses, fees, and collateral changes can exceed the payment. Likewise, annualizing one short interval can make a temporary condition look like a dependable return. Margin supports the position; it does not define its loss
A hypothetical $20,000 linear futures exposure backed by $2,000 of collateral has a ten-to-one ratio of notional to that collateral. A 3% adverse price movement produces a $600 loss before costs, equal to 30% of the collateral. This arithmetic describes sensitivity, not the point at which liquidation occurs. Maintenance rules, collateral haircuts, other positions, and fees can all affect the account's available margin. Some contracts can produce losses exceeding the initial deposit.
Cross-margin and isolated-margin labels also need careful reading. Investigate which balances can be used to support a position and what happens after a shortfall. A feature name does not establish that a loss is legally capped at one displayed amount. Review the governing terms and the risk engine documentation. Distinguish last price, mark price, and settlement
A screen can show a transaction price while the account's risk calculation uses another reference. That is why a liquidation cannot always be explained from the last-trade chart alone. A venue may use a mark price or index methodology for risk calculations, while final settlement follows separate rules. For a dated future, the final reference calculation can also differ from the price at which the last position was traded. Record which price is used for which purpose.
Ask how stale inputs, unusual trades, unavailable data sources, and market interruptions are handled. These questions do not imply that every methodology is flawed. They establish what the holder is actually relying on. A readable comparison should include the reference method and its fallback procedure next to the fee schedule. The cheapest apparent execution is not necessarily the most understandable financial arrangement if important valuation rules remain unknown.
Examine the exit path under stress
An intended stop price is not necessarily an executed price. A market order seeks execution but can encounter worse prices; a limit order constrains price but may not fill. A liquidation is governed by the venue's procedures rather than the holder's preferred exit plan. Separate these outcomes in a paper exercise. Assume the market moves through the intended level and ask what order or risk process would actually operate next.
Also investigate liquidation fees, insurance arrangements, and any automatic position-reduction procedures described by the provider. A reserve or insurance fund should not be interpreted as unlimited protection without reading its purpose and limits. These are product-specific questions, not universal features of all futures or all perpetuals. Choose comparison criteria before choosing a favorite
A sensible comparison begins with an objective: studying a dated hedge, understanding continuous exposure, or examining a short-lived directional position. Then identify the relevant holding period, cash availability, and operational constraints. A trader expecting a brief holding period and a business studying a future payment obligation are not asking the same question. Their research tables should not be forced into one universal best-product ranking.
Record contract units, settlement currency, expiry provisions, collateral eligibility, funding or roll mechanics, market access, and available reporting. Include at least one adverse scenario and one operational interruption. Compare arrangements with similar exposure rather than equal contract counts.
