Forex and currency derivatives: get the direction right
Map the currency, quotation direction, quantity, and payment date before comparing futures, forwards, or options.
Match the money, amount, and date.
Currency derivatives can be studied in relation to a future receipt or payment. A business needing foreign currency has a different exposure from one expecting to receive it. Futures, forwards, and options differ in how they align amounts, dates, collateral, and obligations.

Is the currency being paid or received?
Can the amount change or the transaction be cancelled?
Compare business timing with contract settlement.
Write the commercial or portfolio exposure before choosing comparison criteria. An instrument matching the currency may still leave a timing or quantity mismatch. Include the procedure and possible cost of unwinding the derivative if the expected transaction changes.
