Compare industrial, energy, and agricultural contracts carefully
The commodity category extends beyond metals. A crude oil contract and a grain contract can involve different units, delivery locations, grades, and seasonal considerations. A generic one-contract comparison across them therefore has little meaning. Start with the physical reference and the financial agreement, then ask which part of the underlying commercial activity the derivative is intended to reflect. For a business hedge study, identify the actual material purchased or sold and the relevant place and date. A benchmark contract may not match all three. That difference is the beginning of a basis-risk analysis. It should not be suppressed merely because the material is broadly similar. In a paper scenario, change the local purchase price while leaving the benchmark unchanged and ask what risk remains. Include collateral and execution in the analysis
